Goodtime Parlour banjo
Review by Alex on 14 Nov 2018 review stating Goodtime Parlour banjo
I love this banjo : moving on from a ukulele I found full size banjos too long in the neck.
Can be tuned to “G” using the Deering medium strings, it works really well with this setup
However it can be tuned to “G” using the Deering light string set, as long as you use a light touch on fretting : this is my preference as it can then be eas...Read MoreRead more about I love this banjo : moving on from a

Perfect travel banjo
Review by Chris R. on 9 Dec 2017 review stating Perfect travel banjo
I picked up my Parlor Banjo yesterday at Elderly Instruments, and was absolutely delighted with the sound! It's just as loud and clear as my full-sized banjo, and the fact that it tunes to G was a big selling point, as other small-scale instruments tend to tune much higher. Highly recommended.

Petitie woman, first banjo - Eureka!
Review by Morena D. on 27 May 2015 review stating Petitie woman, first banjo - Eureka!
I did my homework in looking for my first banjo. Bless Deering for making the Parlor Goodtime model that plays in G. I really didn't want to have to get a 19 fret tenor. I love this Banjo! The action is amazing, light weight and just right for a more petite person. While I love to buy locally, no one in the area carried it so I purchased from Elde...Read MoreRead more about I did my homework in looking for my

Great size for small woman or child - very versatile!
Review by Deborah on 4 Sep 2014 review stating Great size for small woman or child - very versatile!
I love this banjo! It has a shorter scale and is light weight so if you are a petite woman (like myself) or a child who needs a shorter scale that plays in G this is it! I have another short scale banjo but it is a C scale so it is not as versatile as this banjo. I like the set up on this banjo the action is great and it doesn't chew up my fingers...Read MoreRead more about I love this banjo! It has a shorter
. The value is great - I got it at my local music store for $429.00, which is quite a bit cheaper than the Deering site. It is also available at Elderly for $429.00 so shop around to find a good deal. Read LessRead less about I love this banjo! It has a shorter

Answers (1)

Deering Banjos

A: The parlor banjo is a Goodtime banjo and we recommend our Deering light gauge strings and no higher. Those gauges are 10,11,13,21w,10. Thanks for asking.

Q: I am wondering if this banjo is of the same quality as the standard 5-string 17 fret or 19 fret. I am 5"1', so my arms are a bit short for the 19-fret instruments. I am not sure if I should get this one or the 17-fret? I want to make sure I am getting the best quality for a serious musician.

A: For a professional level instrument, you would be best to order something like the Eagle II 19-fret or a Sierra 19-fret which are 4-string, tenors. The Parlor is a 5-string, 19-fret banjo and is an introductory level instrument. While still made with the Deering quality, if you are truly serious about your banjo playing, you should go to the upper line. I would enjoy talking about this further with you so if you want to call me at 800-845-7791 for more specifics, I would be happy to be of further service.

Q: I have a 7 year old son who is interesting in learning the banjo. Besides a 4-string tenor banjo, this seems like it would be a good size instrument for him to learn on. He is left-handed, and I am not noticing an option for left-handed on this particular model. Does this banjo have a left-handed option?
Answers (1)

Deering Banjos
07/11/16
A: Sorry but at this time the Parlor lefty tooling is not available. You could order a Goodtime openback left-handed standard scale and have them install spikes at 7,9,10. Then capo at the 5th fret and put the 5th string under the spike at the 10th, this will give him a shorter playing length but he can still use the open G chord forms. Then move the capo up to 4th fret and 3rd fret as he grows so you end up only buying one banjo for him.
