Great sound, very poor fit.
Review by Dean T. on 1 Oct 2024 review stating Great sound, very poor fit.
I bought this head as a direct replacement, for my Americana. It was even labeled for the Americana, on your website. But, after installation, the tension hoop was 1/8” higher than the fretboard, and the strings hit the tension hoop, making the banjo unplayable. I had to use a Dremel, and make a 1/8” cutout in the tension hoop, to make it work. Al...Read MoreRead more about I bought this head as a direct

Great Product, quick service
Review by Gerry D. on 21 Mar 2024 review stating Great Product, quick service
I wanted to soften the response of my Eagle ll openback banjo. I changed the frosted head that comes with the banjo for a fiberskyn head. I like the sound much better. I would like to see Deering have sound patches for each of the heads they sell, that would really help a buyer make a more informed decision.

Quality Head for my openback Vega #2
Review by Wayne C. on 13 Dec 2022 review stating Quality Head for my openback Vega #2
The Fibreskin head is excellent ... quality is A+ and the sound is just right.
note: I purchased a 'medium crown' head for my 2006 Deering Vega #2 banjo (as per advice on the Deering website) ... but have since learned that a 'high crown' head is the recommended head height for this banjo.

Warm, "Misty" Tone
Review by Tim B. on 4 Dec 2022 review stating Warm, "Misty" Tone
I swapped the original Renaissance head for this Fiberskyn on my 12" Goodtime Artisan Americana and was pleasantly surprised. I agree with other reviewers that it brings out more from the bigger wood rim. I didn't notice much of a loss in volume, which I expected from descriptions, and gained a sweeter, blended (or warmer) tone. Also, the sustain ...Read MoreRead more about I swapped the original Renaissance

Banjo head purchase.
Review by Len B. on 3 Aug 2022 review stating Banjo head purchase.
I have been searching for a replacement head for my vintage Bay State banjo, and I contacted Deering by phone. It was refreshing to be able to call a number and get a human on the first try. The person I spoke with was polite, helpful and patient, but gave me misinformation about the head I ended up purchasing, and ultimately returning, shipping c...Read MoreRead more about I have been searching for a

12" Fibreskyn head
Review by Robert G. on 8 Jul 2022 review stating 12" Fibreskyn head
I replaced the original head on my Goodtime Americana Artisan with the 12" Fibreskyn and it gives the banjo a more old-timey sound which is exactly what I was hoping for. Just a little more plunky sounding. And it really looks great too!

It worked out great, absolutely beautiful looking and sounding on my Goodtime 2. Exactly what I was looking/hoping for in terms of sound, looks, and quality. I also like the Deering eagle logo on the fiberskyn head, very cool and unique to have the banjo customized for my playing style but still match the stock Deering look with the logo on fibers...Read MoreRead more about It worked out great, absolutely

After cutting a slash in my old banjo head trying to remove a contact pickup I ordered the Fiberskyn. Not only have I sworn off contact pickups but I love the Fiberskyn sound.

Quality and service
Review by Joe J. on 17 Jan 2022 review stating Quality and service
I was recently attempting to recondition a 1982 Deering maple blossom. The flanged I ordered had stains on them of which I could not remove and I was not sent the proper amount of them. I would think Deering parts would be a step above, but I guess I was mistaken.

Head comparison video in the works yet?
Review by Christopher B. on 17 Aug 2021 review stating Head comparison video in the works yet?
Based on the catalog descriptions, the Fiberskyn might be one extreme of the available replacement heads. Online opinions seem sharply divided between this and the Renaissance. (Maybe the Renaissance is more banjo-y? But I'm treating my Goodtime fretless as more fretless-y than banjo-y.) I ordered both and swapped in the Fiberskyn first and liked ...Read MoreRead more about Based on the catalog descriptions, the

Q: I have a Deering Goodtime Artisan 5 string openback banjo. Do I need the High Crown banjo head? Can this banjo handle medium gauge strings or do I need to stick with light gauge strings?
Answers (1)

Deering Banjos

A: The high crown banjo head is the correct head height for your Artisan Goodtime. It is recommended that you use a light gauge (10,11,13,21w,10) string for the Goodtime series of banjos.

Q: What is the difference between High Crown and Medium Crown? If you were to pair this with a new bridge and strings what are your recommendations for a clawhammer player. This will replace the stock banjo head on a Deering Goodtime with resonator removed.
Answers (1)

Deering Banjos
11/18/15
A: Different banjos have rims that require different height spacing on the banjo head so it can fit down over the rim and be level with the fingerboard. That "dimension" is called a crown height. All our Goodtime banjos require a high crown head for easiest and best installation and the ability to get good head tension without the threads on the tension hooks "bottoming out" or running out of thread. Fiberskyn head is great for clawhammer because it is a thicker plastic and gives a warmer, plunkier sound.
If you have a Goodtime banjo, you can only use the light gauge strings. If you have one of our other banjos, you can use the medium gauge strings for a warmer tone.
As you have a Gooditme Two...you should order high crown and only use the light gauge strings.

Q: Will this fit to my 5 string goodtime open back? And what makes the difference between high or medium crown? Which strings should I take for clawhammer style?
Answers (1)

Deering Banjos
11/17/15
A: You need a high crown head for our Goodtime banjo. You should only use light gauge strings on the Goodtime banjo to safeguard the neck.
