Goodtime Planetary Tuners

The new planetary tuners are a great addition to my trusty Goodtime standard open back banjo. Installation was quick and easy. When I placed my order, Deering filled it and shipped it same day. However, USPS in my area lost the package. I notified Deering customer service and they took care of it ASAP. Thanks Deering!

Tuner replacement

I had to replace my 5th string tuner on my Golden Era. I think it’s from the early 2000’s. It’s a little different than the original so I replaced all of them. They look and perform beautifully. Plug-n-Play Tuners

I ordered these tuners to replace the guitar-style tuners on my Goodtime Americana. They were simple to install and once tightened up they tune very well. Now, less turning, more tuning. :)

I bought this tuners for my Goodtime Americana. I have these planetary tuners on my Rustic Wreath and Vega Old Tyme Wonder, so I'm used to tuning with them. Another reason for buying them is that the banjo looks better with them than with guitar tuners.

Q: On a Goodtime Special or a Deering GT2 does it leave a spot where the screw that holds the Open-geared Guitar Tuners on the back of the peghead is located? Will the planetary tuners cover that when installed?

I hope I asked explained that correctly.

A: When you install the planetary tuners, you will still see the hole for the screw from the guitar tuners.

2. What is the difference between the Deering Planetary and Goodtime Planetary aside from price?

A: Holes in peghead are 3/8".
Deering tuners are "tighter" and an upgrade from the Goodtime tuners.
5th string...remove it carefully by loosening the glue joint with a little tap on either side of the tuning peg with a rubber mallet. Put medium weight superglue on the ridged portion of the shaft of the new tuner and install into neck with a slight (10 degree) back angle towards the peghead of the tuning shaft that holds the string. Leave for 24 hours and install string.

A: If you have guitar style tuners on your banjo, you will see the little hole that us used for the screw to install those. If it is a blond one, there is a very clever way to fill in the hole. Just get those round, blond toothpicks. Put one in the hole and break it off and sand it smooth...ta da!!
Yes...the hole sizes on the new Goodtime banjos will be able to accommodate the planetary tuners. The upper line tuners are made for Deering in Japan by Gotoh. The Goodtime planetary tuners are generic.

A: Yes, they will fit but do not require the small screw attachment that is needed for guitar tuners. You may still see that little hole if you have guitar tuners on your banjo.

A: You need to know the hole size in your peghead. These are tuners that need a 3/8" hole and many older vintage banjos only have 1/4" holes.

A: The Deering planetary tuners that are $159 per set are the tuners for the Deering banjos but can be used on the Goodtime banjos. The planetary tuners that sell for $99 are the upgrade meant for the Goodtime banjos. Thanks for checking.

Q: Are they good to play Flint Hill Special? I know that D-Tuners would be the best option, but I've heard about people that only use planetary tuners to make that fantastic effect! If so, how is it possible?

A: D-tuners are best for bending the note in the manner you suggest unless you have a very good ear and can do that manually and quickly...Jens Kruger can; I saw him do it. It was amazing! :-)
